How do minions reproduce?

We all have, at one point or another, wondered: “Just how are the Minions created? Where do they come from? How do they reproduce?” It’s the question which has been on everyone’s mind since the first Despicable Me movie came out. There are many theories out there concerning the origins of the Minions and how they reproduce. We’ve put together a list of the most popular theories on the matter, from the most logical ones to the really silly and crazy ones. Let us know which theory sounds the most plausible to you!

1) The Minions are created off one single strand of mutated DNA.

In the short film “Orientation Day” which premiered on the Blu-ray release of the first Despicable Me movie, the Minions are getting a briefing about what they can expect from their new job as bomb transporters. In the video, it is implied that the Minions actually come from a single strand of mutated DNA. This could explain where the Minions came from, but doesn’t tell us how they reproduce! Unless they periodically sprout forth from that strand of DNA.

2) The Minions are made from life force

As you probably know there are no female Minions and this is why most people keep wondering where the Minions come from. Some have posed the theory that the Minions are born from life force, and simply spring from the earth, created from an all powerful force which created all living beings on earth. People adapted this theory from the many Overlord video games, which feature minions characters and overlords characters. In this video game series, life force is necessary to create different types of minions. This theory is mostly popular among fans of the Minions movies and the Overlord video games.

3) The Minionizer

It seems Gru created a device called “The Minionizer” which is a ray gun that turns humans into Minions. You simply have to point “the Minionizer” towards a human, press start, and the human is turned into a Minion right away. This was considered *the* official theory since it comes from the creator of the Minions themselves, but it seems this story of Gru’s Minionizer was only created for the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride at Universal Studios. This theory is no longer considered “canon” (meaning part of the official back story of the Minions) and is rejected by most fans as just a side story part of the Universal Studios ride.

4) The Dark Lord theory

There is a very dark theory out there which says that the Minions are actually created from everything that is dark and evil into the world. There seems to be a Dark Lord, or Dark Entity that created the Minions to serve his (or her?) purposes and when he/she was done with them, released them into the world. The Minions have since been on the lookout for another Dark Master, another evil creature to serve, and they reproduce by feeding on the dark feelings which floats in the world’s atmosphere.
If you want our opinion, we think this theory is too much like something out of “Lord of the Rings” and although it sounds very good on its own, isn’t much in tone with the Despicable Me series. It is too dark and scary! We would be very surprised if this was the actual way the Minions were created and how they reproduce.

5) They are aliens

Some think the Minions are aliens who come from another galaxy and who reproduce normally, like humans do. However, this theory does not have an explanation for how they got to earth and where are the female Minions! We think this could be a very good explanation, but would need to be fleshed out.

As you can see, the theories about how the Minions reproduce, and mostly where they come from, are at each end of the spectrum.
